What is a high flow pump?

A high flow pump is a centrifugal pump selected and configured to sustain a high volumetric output, typically above 1000 m³/h, under continuous operating conditions. The defining factor is consistent flow rate across varying head conditions, not peak output under ideal circumstances.

Selection is based on the pump curve: the relationship between flow rate and the head the pump must overcome. As flow increases, available head decreases. A pump running far outside its design range wastes energy, generates heat and wears faster than its service interval allows. Matching the pump curve to your system resistance, so the operating point lands close to the pump's best efficiency point, is what determines whether a rental unit runs reliably for weeks or starts underperforming within days.

High flow pumps are sized and built to maintain performance across extended rental periods, from a week-long construction bypass to a multi-month infrastructure project.

When a single unit cannot meet the required flow rate, parallel configurations deliver combined output without increasing system pressure. Two pumps in parallel double the available flow at the same working head, provided the pipe diameter and total system resistance are assessed beforehand. High flow describes sustained output rate, measured in m³/h, under continuous operating conditions. High volume describes total water quantity moved over a defined period. In pump selection, the practical difference is in how you specify: high flow selection starts with the required m³/h and matches a pump curve to that target; high volume selection derives the required flow rate from the available time window.

Required flow rate equals the volume of water to move per hour, based on source rate and available time window. For dewatering, calculate groundwater inflow from soil permeability, excavation area and hydraulic gradient, then add a safety margin for peak conditions. For pipeline bypass, the required flow rate equals the pipeline's existing throughput.

Yes, depending on contamination type. Silt and fine sand require wear-resistant internals with an appropriate solids passage. Fibrous material needs anti-clogging impeller geometry. Abrasive slurry, sand or gravel in high concentration, requires a dedicated slurry pump with chrome-iron or rubber-lined components, as standard wear-resistant pumps erode rapidly under those conditions.

Rates range from approximately €150 to €5,000 per week. Cost is driven by pump size and flow rate capacity, energy source (diesel or electric), configuration (standard, stainless steel or ATEX-certified) and rental duration. Projects requiring parallel configurations are priced per unit.

Required flow rate depends on groundwater inflow into the excavation, determined by soil permeability, excavation size and proximity to water sources. Inflow rate is calculated from geotechnical data: permeability coefficient, hydraulic gradient and drainage area combined. Minimum pump capacity equals that inflow rate plus a safety margin for peak conditions.
