What is a double diaphragm pump?

A double diaphragm pump is a positive displacement pump with two flexible membranes connected by a central shaft. Double diaphragm pumps are available in air-operated and motor-driven configurations. The air-operated variant, known as AODD (Air Operated Double Diaphragm), is the standard in industrial pump rental: driven by compressed air, it requires no electrical supply at the pump location and is intrinsically safe in hazardous environments.

The AODD design is self-priming and tolerates dry running without damage. It handles chemically aggressive media and viscous fluids that erode conventional pump internals rapidly.

A double diaphragm pump is used for transferring chemically aggressive, viscous or shear-sensitive fluids that centrifugal pumps cannot handle without rapid wear or seal failure. Common applications include chemical transfer, solvent dosing, adhesive and paint transfer, and sump emptying in ATEX-classified production environments.

Double diaphragm pump rental: what are our available configurations?

Our positive displacement pump range is part of the full pump rental fleet, covering sizes from 1 to 4 inches, with capacities from 10 to 90 m³/h. Double diaphragm configurations are available in stainless steel 316, for example.

The 2 in (inch) stainless steel double diaphragm pump rental option (model 440, up to 30 m³/h) handles aggressive process fluids without material degradation.

For ATEX-classified areas, the Graco Husky 2150 is available as an air-operated model certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Every pump leaves our locations in Dordrecht and Dendermonde fully prepared and accompanied by the required documentation.

AODD pump rental for chemical and process applications

Where other pump types are selected primarily on flow rate, AODD pump selection starts with the fluid.

  • Chemical resistance. Stainless steel 316 construction allows AODD pumps to transfer solvents and chemically aggressive media without accelerated internal wear. Standard centrifugal pumps erode rapidly in aggressive chemical applications or fail to seal correctly against the media.

  • Dry-run safe. An AODD pump tolerates running empty without damage. There is no mechanical seal to overheat and no impeller to cavitate when the suction source empties. For batch operations, drum emptying and metering applications, this is a critical operational property.

  • No electrical supply at the pump. Compressed air is the only energy source. In ATEX-classified environments, electrically driven equipment requires zone-rated motors and full electrical hazard controls. An AODD pump removes that requirement entirely.

  • Adjustable output. Flow rate and discharge pressure are both adjustable, with no frequency inverter or additional speed-regulating equipment required.

Specify your application and our team has the right AODD unit ready within 24 hours.

An AODD pump is a positive displacement pump driven by compressed air; a centrifugal pump uses a rotating impeller with an electrical or mechanical drive. AODD pumps handle viscous and chemically aggressive fluids, run dry without damage and are intrinsically safe in ATEX-classified environments. Centrifugal pumps deliver higher flow rates for clean or lightly contaminated water.

Yes. An AODD pump is designed to run dry without damage. There is no mechanical seal to overheat and no impeller that cavitates when the suction source empties. This makes AODD pumps suitable for batch operations, drum emptying and metering applications where the pump regularly starts with an empty or partially filled suction line.

Common double diaphragm pump rental applications

AODD pumps are the standard choice when fluid chemistry, viscosity or site classification rules out centrifugal equipment. Common applications include:

  • Chemical transfer in process and manufacturing industries;

  • Solvent and chemical dosing and metering;

  • Adhesive and paint transfer;

  • Viscous product handling, including oils and food-grade syrups;

  • Industrial wastewater with dissolved chemical content;

  • Sump emptying in ATEX-regulated production environments.

For high-solids or abrasive water streams, our slurry pump rental and sludge pump rental cover those requirements within the same fleet. For larger water volumes in standard industrial settings, our industrial pump rental team advises on the right configuration.

When to choose double diaphragm pump rental over centrifugal options

AODD is the right choice when fluid composition or site classification rules out centrifugal pump options. The primary indicator is the fluid itself: chemically aggressive, highly viscous or shear-sensitive media exclude centrifugal types at the selection stage. The secondary indicator is the environment: ATEX classification at the pump location makes electrically driven equipment impractical without significant additional controls.

For clean water or lightly contaminated water transfer at higher flow rates, our water pump rental and high flow pump rental options deliver better performance for those conditions. For high-pressure requirements, our high-pressure pump rental fleet is the correct starting point.

Our specialists determine the right pump type from your fluid specification and site conditions.

Yes. An air-operated double diaphragm pump has no electrical supply at the pump itself, removing the primary ignition risk in explosive atmospheres. ATEX-certified models are available within the fleet for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, without the need for additional electrical hazard controls at the pump location.

Why rent your double diaphragm pump from Rental Pumps?

Renting a pump for chemical or process applications is not a catalogue decision. Fluid type, concentration and site classification all determine which configuration is safe and effective for your application. At Rental Pumps, you speak directly to an experienced specialist from your very first call. No automated menus, no delays.

Our advice is brand independent. We select the configuration that fits your application, not what we need to move out of inventory. For AODD pump rental, that means specifying the right material, confirming chemical compatibility, and supplying an ATEX-certified model with full documentation where required.

We are VCA* certified and operate from locations in Dordrecht and Dendermonde, with 24-hour support throughout your rental period.
